V.A.W. Prevention

Research into violence against women has been around for many years with people from all walks of life coming together to try and help understand not only the causes but its implications and also how to prevent it.

Researchers believe that by studying the endemic problem of violence against women they will be able to not only provide support for women who have suffered from violence but also to help prevent violence against women in the future. The implications of violence against women can be enormous with women who have suffered losing their self-esteem, being afraid to go out in public or constantly in a state of frenzied worry about whether it might happen again.

Major trans-national organisations such as Amnesty International compliment the work done at individual centres by helping to broadcast findings to the world. Around the world there are centres in almost every country who are researching violence against women in the hope that they will be able to reduce the number of cases of assault and also provide better care to the victims after the assault.

Much of the research is centred on the behavioural tendencies of the men who commit these actions. Whether they have particular personality characteristics or routines which make them more of a threat to women.

Research is also important to try and reverse some of the sentiment in the public today. In a study of young children in Scotland it was found that a majority of the pupils believed that violence towards women was justified it they had done something to deserve it like forget to make the tea.
