V.A.W. Prevention

The UK charity Refuge provides a network of safe houses and accommodation for women and children when they are suffering from domestic violence. These safe houses provide vital assistance for women who are struggling to deal with domestic violence and need an escape.

These houses form communities with staff who understand the problems that women and children are going through and can help provide emotional and practical support in their times of need. All women and children in the house other than the staff will be escaping from domestic violence so you will be able to share your experiences and learn from others providing strength for each other during this difficult time.

Refuge is a strong social campaigner for the eradication of domestic violence and they believe that prevention and education are the most effective ways to combat domestic violence. Refuge believes society must change its perspective on violence against women and especially domestic violence. Refuge look to raise awareness of instances of domestic violence amongst all groups in the UK. They are looking to educate children and adults, MPs and policymakers.

Violence against women is now endemic in society. In the UK in 2007/8 72 women were killed by their partners or were killed by their former partners. There are half a million reported incidents every year with a quarter of all women experiencing some form of domestic violence in their lives. It is also believed that over half of all cases of domestic violence are not reported and when they are it will be after a prolonged period of violence.
