In the United States the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is the umbrella organisation which helps lead the way to help the country reduce the number of violent attacks on women. It is a component of the US Department of Justice and the main Act it is responsible for is the Violence Against Women Act . The Office on Violence Against Women was founded in 1995 to help provide financial and technical support for communities and organisations that are initiating and running programs and practices involving violence against women, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence.
Since 1995 The Office on Violence Against Women has dispersed nearly $3bn in grants and cooperative agreements. It has a multi-channel program to implement the Violence Against Women Act and prevent cases of violence against women.
The OVW looks to work together and collaborate with state and federal branches of the police and prosecutors and also with victim advocates and more importantly healthcare providers who are often the first line of defence in the prevention of violence against women. These front line workers are witness to the early stages of violence when women arrive at hospitals with black eyes or bruised arms these can be early signs of domestic violence.
Persuading these groups to work together the OVW hopes that they will be able to secure better protection for women who suffer from violence and also greater conviction rates for those who have been violent towards women.
The work of the OVW helps women cope the after effects of the violence they have suffered and help them live their lives whilst also helping the state to prosecute those who have committed these crimes.
